TV Shows
The Hero's Journey can be found in various forms including reality TV shows. Here are some examples of our favourite quest reality TV shows:
My Kitchen Rules
My kitchen rules is a cooking competition where teams create 'instant' restaurants in their homes
and cook for guest teams and celebrity chef judges. The teams and judges then critique the team
cooking. The team with the lowest score is eliminated. Then they go the MKR kitchen HQ and
compete in various cooking challenges until just one team remains.
-
The ordinary world: their ordinary, boring life before the competition. Their lives had no flavour before they entered
-
The call: All the contestants have accepted the call to cook on a TV show
-
Meeting with the mentor: The judges offer feedback, support and guidance- they are the mentors
-
Tests, allies and enemies: The contestant face many tests in the kitchen. The other contestants are the enemies but can also be allies.
-
The ordeal: the final cook off, where the top two teams will complete to see who is the top team
-
Reward: the team that wins gets $100 000 'that will change their lives'
Wipe Out
For those of you that don't know: Wipe Out is a show that originated in the UK. On the show contestants take on crazy funny obstacle courses and often Wipeout. Every round the slowest/weakest contestants are eliminated until there is just one survivor who take home the coveted crown and $50 000!
-
The ordinary world: the ordinary world is the contestant’s life before they were on the show.
-
The call: the contestants have all received the call to be on the show
-
Meeting the mentor: before the obstacle course each contestant gets a quick interview from the host who gives them support and a few tips to help them get through it
-
Crossing the threshold: the contestants cross the threshold when the horn blows and they must begin the obstacle course, it is the moment when they leave the ordinary world behind.
-
Test, trials and enemies: Hopefully it's pretty clear that the various parts of the obstacle courses, such as the big balls, are the trials and the other contestants are the enemies
-
The final ordeal: The grand final is the final ordeal as it is the last hurdle where the top three contestants must compete for the wipe out crown and $50 000!
-
The reward: the reward when is the contestant that completes the final obstacle course in the fastest time. The winner gets to take home the crown and $50 000. This stage can also be seen as the resurrection as we see the winner in a new light and they are transformed!
