Books

Literature is one of the main forms of the Hero's Journey. The purpose of books are to offer the readers an escape, opportunity to explore worlds that one can not usually go to. It offers the readers heroes to admire and to look up to, and what the real "prize" is in life. What's worthy in life?, and what to strive for. Popular books that follow this journey cycle are The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Hobbit, Lord of the rings, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and The Odyssey.

For example The Hunger Games follows this sequence by:

The ordinary world is District 12, where Katniss and her family and friends live.
The call to adventure/action, is when Prim, Katniss' sister, gets reaped for the Hunger Games. And Katniss volunteers in her place.
The refusal of the call is when after the reaping ceremony Katniss thinks over her decision and throws away Peeta's father's offerings.
The meeting the mentor is when Katniss is presented with Haymitch, the former victor that would mentor Katniss and Peeta through the games, and win sponsors.
The crossing the threshold is when Katniss leaves District 12 on a train to the capitol.
The tests, allies, and enemies is when Katniss is at the training grounds and picks her allies, and distinguish enemies and practices and learns new survival skills. Also when she is in the games, the fire scene at the beginning was an important challenge that leads to the approach.
The approach to the inmost cave is when Katniss has run into the higher up district group, and Peeta is also with them. She spots them but they also notice her, and the group chases her until Katniss climbs up a tree to avoid them temporarily. In that scene Rue helps Katniss out and they escape together and we learn that Katniss has two main allies, Rue and Peeta.
The ordeal is when Katniss and Rue make a plan to blow up the higher up districts group's food supply. Though something in the plan went wrong and Rue is killed by a member of the group.
The reward is when Katniss and Peeta win the game. Though they did it by cheating the capitol into letting two victors through.
The road back is when Katniss and Peeta are transferred back into the capitol. The capitol is unhappy that they got played into allowing 2 victors. Katniss also now has to deal with her love life, she now cannot be open about her love for Gale, since Peeta has feeling for her and the act they had in the games.
The resurrection is when Katniss faces the capitol. She has to prove that her love for Peeta is real. But she knows the capitol is corrupt and that they would get back at her.
The return with the elixir is when Katniss returns to her new life in district 12 as a victor. This new life allows Katniss' family to live in wealth, something Katniss had always wanted for her family.
